District 725 Members Reach Out to Save Lives Friday October 26, 2001 Brother Dick Amemiya, Vice President of IAM Local Lodge 720-J, District Lodge 725 announced an outreach effort on behalf of Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches (A3M). Someone dies every nine minutes from leukemia or lymphoma. A bone marrow transplant is the only chance for life. That chance is so slim for Asian Pacific Americans or people of mixed heritages because bone marrow is often ethnic specific. A3M is reaching out through APALA (Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance) to the IAM's Asian Pacific American members. A3M holds over 300 donor registration drives a year and has registered over 65,000 donors. They provide language and culturally specific assistance and education programs. They are also improving retention of donor lists as about 50% of the donors who are potentially matched with patients are either unreachable, not interested or otherwise deferred. Contact A3M at (888) A3M-HOPE or email them at a3m@LTSC.org to help build a stronger registry. As of May 2001, over 63,000 donors were registered and 63 matches actually resulted in marrow transplants. Brother Dick Amemiya's work with APALA made this important community connection. As a founding member of APALA, Brother Amemiya has an outstanding history of labor and community activism. Both Brother Amemiya and newly formed District Lodge 947 President/DBR Janet Wright (whose mother is Japanese) took a few minutes of their time to register with A3M. Together, they urge every IAM member who is able to register with the National Marrow Donor Program. Special emphasis goes out to our Asian Pacific American Brothers and Sisters because the chances for a bone marrow match are so slim. Register through you local blood bank today-- You could save someone's life! IAM Safety & Health Department Update Friday October 26, 2001 Facts About Anthrax Direct person-to-person spread of anthrax is extremely unlikely, if it occurs at all. Therefore, there is no need to immunize or treat others exposed to a patient with anthrax. Additional information on emergency operations planning and bioterrorism:

Two members of District Lodge 725, Local Local 946 lost their lives August 27, 2001 when their air tankers collided over raging wildfires in Northern California. The two pilots, Larry Groff and Lars Stratte, worked for San Juaquin Helicopters, a Service Contract Act firm contracted by the California Department of Forestry to provide airborne firefighters and firefighting equipment during California's long fire season. The new legislation extends the educational benefits enjoyed by state employees to contract workers, explained GVP Lee Pearson who lobbied for the measure. The two pilots were both military veterans doing incredibly dangerous work. Smoky conditions, fast weight shifts, turbulent winds, as well as constantly dealing with obstructions like trees and power lines add to the pilot’s peril. IAM Provides Disaster Relief September 14, 2001 Dear Sisters and Brothers: IAM members across the land are working through the losses inflicted by the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Some members lost their lives, some lost friends and family members. All are affected and all are looking for ways to help. This is a time to look within and to one another for strength. Our IAM Community Services Department, working with Local Lodge Community Services Committees, can help make lives easier for members affected by tragedy. Among the services offered are blood drives, food banks and opportunities to volunteer. We work with the American Red Cross and we coordinate with the Salvation Army and local hospitals to give assistance and to give members a means to get involved. Confidential counseling services are available and I encourage members and their families to take full advantage of these services. At times like this, children can be deeply troubled by shocking images shown repeatedly on television. I urge all parents to closely monitor their children for changes in behavior and sleep patterns. The resources are there to help members care for themselves and their families. Members should contact their Local Lodge Community Services Committee for a full list of services available. Any Local Committee that would like guidance or assistance during this unique and challenging time should contact Maria Cordone, Director, Community Services Department, at 301-967-3433. In solidarity, R. Thomas Buffenbarger Union

Two District Lodge 725 Members Die in Midair Collision Monday August 27, 2001 The IAM lost two valued members on Monday, August 27th when the aircraft they were piloting crashed in a midair collision. The two pilots, Larry Groff and Lars Stratte of Local 946 in Rancho Cordova, worked for San Joaquin Helicopters and were fighting forest fires in Northern California. “Our hearts go out to the families of these members and their co-workers,” said IAM President Tom Buffenbarger. “I hope they know the prayers and thoughts of this entire union are with them today.” Groff and Stratte were killed when their air tankers slammed into each other over a raging wildfire. They were experienced military veterans doing incredibly dangerous work, state fire officials said. The smokey conditions, the fast shifts in weight, the turbulent winds, as well as constantly dealing with obstructions like trees and power lines make this a very difficult exercise. These workers were part of a group that had voted to join the IAM last April and just ratified their first contract this past week. Grand Lodge Representative Gerry Greer, who led the negotiations, said that the pilots were “a very dedicated, brave group. Their job is one of the most dangerous occupations that exists.” “Workplace injuries and deaths occur too often. We need to remain ever vigilant,” said Western Territory GVP Lee Pearson. “These new brothers made the ultimate sacrifice trying to protect the families in the regions where the fires are occurring. Our sympathy and prayers go out to the families of these brave young men.” IAM&AW Dedicates Memorial to Fallen Members Friday August 24, 2001 Hollywood, MD The IAM dedicated a memorial at the William W.
