Help Needed in District 26 / Pratt & Whitney Brain Tumor Study
October 25, 2002

District Lodge 26 representing IAM Members at Pratt & Whitney is requesting information from past and present workers from the Pratt & Whitney Connecticut Operations.  The District and Pratt & Whitney have started a study as a result of a high incident of Glioblastoma brain tumors.

Two separate studies are being conducted with help from Dr. Esmen from University of Oklahoma and Dr. Gary Marsh from the University of Pittsburgh.  On-going meetings are conducted with Dr. Mary Lou Fleissner from the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

A workgroup meets regularly to share information, ideas and ways to communicate to the workers and the public.  This group includes representatives from IAM District 26, the IAMAW Safety and Health Department, the University of Connecticut Health Center, Industrial hygienists, the Connecticut Department of Public Health, physicians, facilities site managers, human resource representatives and health and safety representatives from Pratt and Whitney.

Two members of the workgroup are widows, Carol Shea and Kate Greco who after the death of their husbands started the Worked to Death group. They represent families of Glioblastoma victims and have started an informational and support web site at www.workedtodeath.net

If you worked at any of these sites or know someone who worked at these sites and have information that may be helpful, or if you need assistance contact one the following:

IAM&AW International President, R. Thomas Buffenbarger closed the conference addressing the participants in general session at IAM Headquarters about the important work done by the delegates.

IAM Members Can Speak Out on
Blue Ribbon Commission Online Survey
Tuesday July 2, 2002

For the next 30 days, the IAM will conduct an online survey at www.goiam.org to give members an opportunity to connect with the
IAM’s policy-making Blue Ribbon Commission.

The Commission recently completed Town Hall meetings in 40 locations across North America where thousands of IAM members participated and responded to three important questions: What is working well with our Union; What is not working well with our Union and What changes need to be made in our Union?

As in previous Blue Ribbon Commission meetings in 1995 and 1998, IAM members’ responses will guide policy changes, program
development and reforms throughout our Union.

The anonymous survey is brief and takes only minutes to complete. Start by clicking on to www.goiam.org and then follow the simple
instructions. Your input will help set the tone and direction of the IAM for years to come.

    Lockheed Strikers Win Public Support

Polling by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows overwhelming public support for IAM members and their crusade for job security. The poll shows that 67 percent of the public believes the strikers’ demands for job security are “reasonable.”  Less than half that tally, 33 percent, see the demands as “unreasonable”, despite an anti-union editorial stance by the newspaper.

Striking IAM members at Lockheed’s facility in Marietta, GA, clearly did a magnificent job of telling their story. The workers took to the picket lines in a determined attempt to keep Lockheed from exporting their jobs to low-wage areas around the world.

“This strike is about our community and our families,” declared Jim Carroll, IAM Local 709 president. “For many years, the employees working for Lockheed Martin have been identified as being the most loyal workers in America. We want the best for Lockheed Martin, as many of us have spent our lives building the company.

“We pray that our friends and neighbors continue to support us in our efforts,” Caroll said. He urged interested IAM members, and others, to visit the newspaper website at:

    http://www.accessatlanta.com/ajc/opinion/0302/0313equal.html

    Don’t forget to vote.

For information regarding the ongoing strike, visit the Local Lodge 709 web site.

    Workers Memorial Day 2002
    Worker's Memorial Day Poster
On April 28th the IAM will have a memorial service at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center located in Hollywood, Maryland. This service will be held honor and remember those members who lost their lives while on the job during 2001.  The IAM Workers’ Memorial Lighthouse was dedicated during last years Annual Safety and Health Conference and has a special place on the grounds at WWW’s newly created Memorial Park. Names of IAM fallen workers are immortalized in a brick bearing their name and date of death around its base.

On Workers Memorial Day 2002, as we remember those who lost their lives on September 11th and all those killed and injured on the job, IAM District and Local Lodges will organize and mobilize for better working conditions. We will demand a strong ergonomics standard, stronger enforcement of the law and protections from known workplace hazards and from new safety and security threats. We will demand OSHA coverage for all workers and the freedom of workers to organize, and speak out and bargain for safe jobs, respect and a better future.

Here are some materials and information from the AFL-CIO to help you participate in Workers Memorial Day: Workers Memorial Day 2002 Materials

    IAM Press Release
Lockheed Contract Talks with Machinists Stall over Job Security, Pensions

Washington D.C., February 25, 2002 - There is little progress to report in the contract talks between Lockheed Martin and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), according to John Crowdis, IAM Aerospace Coordinator.

"Job security and pensions are two of our members' main issues. Good pay and benefits mean nothing if you are laid off or your job is shipped overseas."

The IAM is in Florida negotiating contracts covering 6000 members at Lockheed Martin facilities in Sunnyvale/Santa Cruz CA, Palmdale CA, Lompoc CA, Meridian MS, Clarksburg WV, Cape Canaveral FL, as well as the Marietta GA facility.

"Lockheed is a successful and highly profitable company. They just won the Joint Strike Fighter contract, the biggest in history," said Crowdis. "They can afford to share those profits with the workers who spent years making Lockheed what it is today." Crowdis added that Lockheed is proposing to dramatically increase insurance premiums for employees.

The Union is seeking help for its retirees, whose insurance premiums recently skyrocketed.

"I retired six years ago," said Wendell Harper, who worked at the Marietta plant for 32 years. "My insurance premiums have increased fivefold since I retired, with the biggest increase last year. I'm taking care of my wife, who is in bad health, but I may have to go get a job if this continues. I'm afraid for our future."

"Some of our members are paying Lockheed every month, instead of getting a pension check," said Crowdis. "The cost of their insurance is greater than the pension they receive from Lockheed."

"We're not asking for the moon," said Crowdis. "Our members feel Lockheed needs to treat the workers with dignity and respect, and not demand take aways while Lockheed is very prosperous."

The contract between Lockheed Martin and the Machinists Union in Marietta GA expires at midnight, March 1st, 2002.

    Workplace Evaluations of Musculoskeletal Disorders
    Friday February 22, 2002

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) operates an 800-number to provide workers, employers, and organizations with information about various workplace safety and health concerns. Over the past several years, the volume of NIOSH 800-number calls concerning work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) has grown. They are now second only to questions about chemical hazards. WMSD inquiries, exceeding 3,700 in 1996, have come largely from callers associated with small- and medium-sized businesses, which often have limited resources to deal with occupational safety and health issues. This document has been prepared to respond to the needs of this audience. Click here to read more...
